Our story

1958 – The Start of Our Story

In 1958 John Jenkins started his business, focusing particularly on maintenance and repairs for local authorities and housing associations, as well as new work within the domestic and house building market.

From the outset, it was clear that John’s entrepreneurial spark and his commitment to quality and service were going to lead to business success and fast growth. Orders were coming in fast and John began making plans to expand his business into new premises in the local area. With support from a few members of staff, he was able to consolidate the foundations and drive the business forward.

New Markets, New Industries

In 1976 John invited his son Hugh to join the business as a partner to assist with the growing order book. From this point on, Hugh continued in his father’s footsteps and expanded the business further, venturing into new markets and new industries. As well as catering for existing customers, he branched out and succeeded in adding new clients and work to the company portfolio. A large part of the success was down to the talented and dedicated staff who supported Hugh throughout the years.

A National Supplier

The company quickly became a national supplier of steelwork, delivering and erecting steel throughout the country. With the assistance of Hugh’s wife Gillian and the loyal staff, the company successfully added to the growing list of clients, completing contracts of all sizes, from large to small.

In 2009, with the volume of work continuing to increase, a new manufacturing facility was built to cater for the demands for the company’s products and to help to face the new challenges ahead.

In 2010, Hugh’s son Jonny, a qualified surveyor, joined the company, which further enhanced the family commitment to moving forward in the market, and as the business moved into its third generation, Jonny was able to secure the future of the business by ensuring all CE marketing and health and safety audits were successfully completed.

New Technology, New Management Structure

As Hugh reached a milestone of forty years’ running the company, he started succession planning, which culminated in Jonny taking over as managing director in 2016. In recent years, Jonny has restructured the business with new technology introduced and a new management team established for strategic growth. Over the past few years, we have been pushing the boundaries as we
drive forward, and this has included:

  • increasing our structural capacity significantly
  • successfully moving into complex high-value projects
  • investing in CNC Plasma technology
  • investing in CAD/Solidworks software
  • investing in ERP software to maximise efficiencies
  • investing in staff training.
Looking Forward with a Bold Vision

The business remains ambitious, hard-working, and in fantastic health, and in 2022 it won the President’s Award at the Scottish Engineering Awards, a great accolade. Today, as we approach our 65th anniversary, we look back at a great story of growth and the delivery of quality products and quality service. More significantly, we look forward to continuing that growth, informed by a bold vision which continues to be focused on delivering quality to our clients, to putting something back into our community, and to being a supportive, positive employer.
